Every military member understands the necessity of being prepared. Before your deployment, you double check your life insurance as a vital part of your total preparedness. You know the danger you’re facing before as you prepare to deploy. So you carefully verify that your life insurance is adequate to cover that imminent danger.
But then comes the let down: many military members will drop their well-considered life insurance once they return from a hostile duty assignment. When you’re safely home, you may feel that the life insurance you so carefully prepared is no longer needed. Essentially, you purchased "trip insurance:" intended to meet your needs only during the time you were in harm’s way. But whether you’re deployed to hostile territory or back home with family, your family’s financial needs haven’t changed. In both cases, they still need your protection.
Think about the possibility that you may return home with health problems that don’t manifest until later. What then? Low cost life insurance may become out of your reach forever. Your health may change at any time, rendering you uninsurable, or only insurable at a greatly increased cost. Once you have been approved for life insurance, keep it. Life insurance shouldn’t be “trip insurance” - just for your trip. If you handle it that way, your family could take the fall. We are all vulnerable; as military members, you know that fact best. Your family needs you to care for them, whether you are there or not.
There are many flavors in life insurance: whole life, universal life, variable life and term life. Most of these can be thought of as life insurance combined with an investment account. In other words, part of your insurance premium pays for a specified amount of life insurance, while the rest is deposited into a cash value account of some type. Your insurance company is investing that portion of your premium for you. The cash value of your fund might be guaranteed or not, and the cost of this kind of insurance is relatively high.
Term life insurance, on the other hand, is life insurance on your terms. You pay only a fixed premium for a specified amount of insurance. There is no accumulation of funds in a related account, no confusion about what you have. You get what you pay for – affordable life insurance. And your beneficiary is paid the full insurance benefit.
Life insurance is best when it’s right for you. The conventional wisdom is to "buy term and invest the difference." If you’re military, you’re disciplined: you can buy the term life insurance you need and invest your money yourself. You can be both well insured, and in control of your own financial investments, with term life insurance.
You’re young, healthy and military; you live life on your terms. When you’re young and military, age and health are on your side: you’re able to qualify for term life insurance at the lowest cost and with the easiest eligibility. Term life insurance best provides financial protection for a specific period of time.
If you have long term financial obligations like a mortgage and educational costs for children but you can’t spend a lot for life insurance, you’ve again defined the best terms for term life insurance. Term life insurance can meet your family’s living expenses, mortgage pay-off, college costs, whatever you decide should be covered. Think of term life insurance as peace of mind for you because you know that your family members will receive the protection they need, without a major impact on your finances today.
Insurance companies are often able to provide groups with lower insurance premiums. At MBA, we’re able to pass the most favorable life insurance terms on to you, active duty and retired military members, military veterans, National Guard and Reservists, federal employees, and your families. Not everyone is eligible for MBA membership and MBA sponsored group life insurance – but you may be.
Apply for life insurance by answering some basic health and lifestyle questions. Depending on your age or requested coverage amount, you may be asked to undergo a limited physical examination, which is paid for by MBA Based on those results, your application will either be approved or declined for coverage. You know up front what your premium will be. There is no "bait and switch" with premium rates.
